eMediaLibrary Downloading Instructions

To Begin

  1. Go to the DGPL website.
  2. Place cursor over the Books tab located on the left side of the homepage.
  3. Choose Downloadable Books from the drop-down menu.
  4. Please take the time to read the brief instructions provided.
  5. Click on the Download eBooks and eAudiobooks icon to launch the website for downloading eAudiobooks and eBooks.
  6. A great place to start is the Help tab on the eMediaLibrary webpage. Then select My Help. This will tailor instructions to your specific device.

Browse and Check Out a Title

  1. Click on Sign In to log in to get the greatest selection of titles.
  2. Select Downers Grove Public Library.
  3. Enter your library card number and your SWAN online catalog account PIN as the password.
  4. Choose a title that you would like to download.
    1. WMA and MP3 are the eAudiobook formats.
    2. EPUB, PDF, and Kindle are the eBook formats.
    3. Mac computers can only play MP3 files.
  5. Click Add to Cart.
  6. Choose Proceed to Check Out.
  7. Choose a lending period of 7, 14, or 21 days. You may have a maximum of 5 titles checked out at a time.
  8. Click Confirm Check Out.
  9. Click Download.


Nook Downloading Instructions

Nook and Nook Simple Touch App Downloading Instructions

  1. You will need Adobe Digital Editions.
  2. On your right, click Download Now.
  3. The first time Adobe Digital Editions opens, you will be prompted to enter an Adobe ID.
    1. Select Authorize Computer.
    2. Click the link Get an Adobe ID and follow the instructions to create an Adobe account. You will need an email address.
    3. Return to the activation screen and enter the email address and password for your Adobe account.
    4. Click Activate.

Transfer an eBook to an eReader

  1. Connect your eReader to your computer.
  2. In Library View, Adobe Digital Editions will recognize the eReader with an icon listed under Bookshelves in the left pane.
  3. Click on the eBook you would like to transfer.
  4. Drag the title to the eReader icon. As you're dragging it, the small red cross icon will change from red to green as you drop it into the device.
  5. The Copy Documents dialog box is displayed and the title is transferred.
  6. When transfer is complete, the Copy Documents dialog box closes.
  7. You can now disconnect the eReader.

How to return an eBook early

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer.
  2. In Library View, click on the title you want to return.
  3. A small white arrow will appear in the upper left corner of the book cover image.
  4. Click the arrow.
  5. Select Return this Book from the drop down menu.

Kindle Downloading Instructions

  1. Browse and check out a Kindle book.
  2. Click Get for Kindle.
  3. You will be directed to Amazon's website.
  4. You may be required to sign into your Amazon.com account if you are not already logged in.
  5. Select a Kindle device or Kindle reading app.
  6. Click Get Library Book.
  7. Sync your device or app to download the book.
  8. An active WiFi connection is required for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. If your Kindle is not WiFi capable or you do not have an active WiFi connection, click Download Now to read instructions for transferring files via USB.

How to return a Kindle eBook early

  1. Go to Manage Your Kindle within your Amazon account.
  2. You will see the title listed and designated as public library.
  3. On the right, click Actions.
  4. Click Return This Book.


eAudiobook Downloading Instructions

Downloading eAudiobooks Software

  1. You will need to download OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Click Download Now to run the software and follow the prompts to complete the download.

Transfer an Audiobook to a Portable Player

  1. Connect your portable player to your computer.       
  2. In OverDrive Media Console highlight the title you would like to transfer.
  3. Click the Transfer button.  The Transfer Wizard is displayed.
  4. Click Next.
  5. The Transfer Wizard searches for a connected portable device.
  6. If your device is detected, the Confirm screen is displayed.
  7. In the Confirm dialog box, select the Part(s) you want to transfer by checking the box (es) next to the Part name(s).
  8. Click Next to begin transferring the file(s) to your device.
  9. When the transfer is complete, the Transfer Wizard displays a Success message.
  10. Click Finish to exit the Transfer Wizard.
  11. Disconnect your portable device.

*If using an Apple device make sure that iTunes has the most current update.

*If downloading to an iPod, etc. make sure to have Manage Music Manually selected at the device’s summary page in iTunes.


iPad, Smartphone, Tablet, and Nook HD or Color App Downloading Instructions

Downloading the OverDrive Media Console App

  1. Go to the App Store on your device.
  2. Tap Search and search for OverDrive Media Console, which is displayed in the search results.
  3. Tap OverDrive Media Console.
  4. Tap the Free button.
  5. Tap the Install button.
  6. Certain devices may prompt you to enter a password.
  7. Enter your password and tap OK.
  8. OverDrive Media Console is now installed.
    1. This app is for both eAudiobooks and eBooks. The first time Adobe Digital Editions opens, you will be prompted to enter an Adobe ID.
    2. Select Authorize Computer
    3. Click the link Get an Adobe ID and follow the instructions to create an Adobe account. You will need an email address.
    4. Return to the activation screen and enter the email address and password for your Adobe account.

    5. Click Activate.

How to return an eBook early from the app

  1. In the OverDrive Media Console App select Edit.
  2. Tap the red circle to the left of the book.
  3. Tap Delete.
  4. Select Return then Delete.
