Library Renovations

As part of the library's Strategic Plan, we are undergoing a renovation on our building. Check back often for updates on this exciting project!

The library Board of Trustees has selected Product Architecture and Design, a Chicago-based firm, to lead the renovation. As seen in its current list of projects (Arlington Heights and Niles, among several others), Product Architecture and Design has developed a unique specialty in library renovation.

The renovation will address some of the concerns and interests submitted by staff and community members during the 2012 strategic planning process, such as:

  • More study spaces

  • Upgraded technology

  • Improved Wi-Fi

  • Enhanced display of and access to items

  • Attractive children’s area

  • “Café” space where food and drink are welcome

Upcoming timeline events:

  • Throughout April – Schematic Design research

    • Engineering consultants evaluate the building’s existing systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, telecommunications, roof, windows, alarm systems, etc.).

    • Architects complete computerized drawings of the current building.

    • Inventory of collection size, furniture, and equipment is recorded.

  • Throughout May – Project discussions with architects and library managers

  • May 22, 7:30 p.m. – regular Board of Trustees meeting

    • Architects present possible floor plans.

    • All are welcome to attend.

  • June 26, 7:30 p.m. – regular Board of Trustees meeting

    • You’re invited! This meeting is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library, who will be hosting refreshments.

    • Observe and comment on the architect’s Schematic Design, which details their proposed plan for allocation and arrangement of space. This design will not involve furniture or color schemes but will include an initial cost estimate.

  • July 24, 7:30 p.m. – regular Board of Trustees meeting

    • Architects present Design Development phase of their work, including possible selection of materials and finishes.

    • All are welcome to attend.

The bidding, evaluation, and contracting process will come later in the year, leading to the beginning of construction February 1, 2014. View the complete project timeline here.
