The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

On the fantastical island of Thisby, people come from far and wide to watch the deadly Scorpio Races, run by anyone brave enough to try to tame and ride the man-eating water horses that come out of the surrounding ocean each autumn. Out of desperation, Kate “Puck” Connolly is riding her family horse this year; the first time a woman or a land horse has competed. Returning champion Sean Kendrick is riding, too, dreaming of independence from his employer for himself and his water horse. Alternating between Puck and Sean’s perspectives throughout, two narrators expertly perform each role. With everything that matters to them at stake, the tension builds to an action-packed finale. ~ Lizzie Matkowski
