The Summer Experiment by Cathie Pelletier

Every year Henry Horton Harris Hemsly wins the State Science Fair with a bizarre but brilliant scheme. This year Roberta McKinnon, along with her best pal Marilee, are determined to break ol’ Henry’s winning streak. Now all they need is an amazing project.

Luckily, they have all summer long to work on it. Luckier still, mysterious lights begin to hover over their tiny Maine town of Allagash. Back in 1976 a similar situation brought a lot of attention to Allagash: four art students in their 20’s went camping on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and encountered a huge glowing flying object.  Revealed through hypnosis years later, all four had been abducted into the craft and were subjected to examinations. (True story). Roberta has a brilliant idea of her own. All she and Marilee have to do is find the source of the recent glowing lights (alien UFO’s?) and prove they really do exist!

Miss Diane says, “Readers will  love spunky eleven-year-old Robbie as she takes us through her last summer of childhood innocence. This is an old fashioned coming-of-age story, filled with secrets, sadness and all the excitement and adventure one can find in a rural town.”  280 p.  Grades 4 - 6
